Dear friends, we did receive some responses to our request to submit names for the FENS-working group on Food Based Dietray Guidelines. However, it is the aim to have one name per member Society in order to have a good coverage of Europe and persons that bring the results of the Task-Force activities back to the member societies. Please, be so kind and give official response when you have identified the respresentative Person for this task force if not done yet. Below a further description about the purpose of the task force. Attached is the list of nominees as currently recorded. Please, send again a mail if your name is missed.
Best regards
Heiner Boeing, president
Federation of European Nutrition Societies
Food Based Dietary Guidelines Working Group
Aim: The Federation of European Nutrition Societies (FENS) seeks to provide guidelines to its members regarding Food Based Dietary Guidelines (FBDG) that takes into consideration national and regional variations.
FENS consists of European Nutrition Societies, each representing one country. The coming together of this diverse membership to establish standardisation of practice regarding topics such as dietary guidelines across Europe as represented in the European council (members are within or external to the European Union), provides an exemplar of a vigorous nutrition research community that is central to developing strategies to deal with nutritional-related diseases.
FENS is aware and welcomes the divergence of FBDG across Europe. The European diet is varied and rich one, and is dependent on geographic position and cultural norms. It is important that this is recognised at a country and regional level. However, it should be noted that emphasis of dietary requirements can vary, as shown in the examples of 8 differing European FBDG reviewed (found below). For example, the EFSA emphasises the reduction in risk, DGE (Germany) focuses on nutrients and FSAI (Ireland) and FSA (UK) focus on the 5 a day message.
Proposal: Led by the President of FENS, a working group shall be established to bring together representatives of FENS members to work together in a collaborative way to create standardised pan-European Food Based Dietary Guidelines that focuses on best practices.
Food Based Dietary Guidelines Working Group (FBDGWG) will:
- Be led by the President of FENS
- Made up of nominees from FENS Members (preferentially with 1 delegate per member country)
- Meet face to face preferential twice a year – 1 day per meeting
- All other communication will by via email or other meeting communication tools
- Location: Central and Eastern Europe
Outcomes: Provide a standardisation of views regarding the emphasis of strategies and purpose of FBDG across Europe. Guidelines will be produced and provided to each FENS member country to be used in consultation with their governments and agencies to prepare national and regional guidelines, to provide uniformity of nutrition focus across the continent..
Timeline:
- First face to face meeting – October/November 2017
- IUNS-ICN: FENS-Symposia on Food Based Dietary Guidelines and meeting
- FENS2019: Scientific Session on outcomes of Working Group, Publication and Official Statement
