The results of the survey will be used to help develop a proposal for the 10YFP Programme on Sustainable Food Systems, including its overall goal, objectives, work areas and practical implementation measures.
Actors including governments, private companies, civil society, researchers, UN agencies, financial institutions and others from all countries are invited to participate.
By participating in this survey, you will also have an opportunity to express interest for your organization’s involvement as an active partner in the development and implementation of the future programme.

We, the undersigned, meeting together at the 5th EUPHA European Conference on Migrant and EthnicMinority Health held at the Andalusian School of Public Health (Spain), on the 9th to 12th April 2014,
hereby endorse the following statement:
When many European countries are implementing austerity policies, it is especially important that the
public health community should speak out on behalf of the poor and marginalised. Among them are
many migrants, who for various reasons are especially vulnerable at this time.
• First, austerity policies mean that many people, migrants and non-migrants, are facing a
worsening of their already poor conditions, with damaging consequences for their mental health
and wellbeing. As migrants frequently take the jobs that no-one else is willing to perform,
involving poorly paid, precarious, and often dangerous employment, they are especially
vulnerable.
• Second, those who are already vulnerable suffer most from cuts in health and social services.
Among them are many migrants, who may have unmet mental and physical health needs as a
consequence of conditions prior to, during, and after migration and now face worsening access to
services.
• Third, a few countries have used the economic crisis to reduce entitlement to health and social
services, in some cases specifically targeting undocumented migrants, with obvious implications
for their health.
• Fourth, in some countries increasingly harsh restrictions on undocumented migrants, including
long periods of detention in sub-standard facilities pose a serious threat to their physical and
mental health.
• Fifth, in some countries we are seeing the rise of xenophobia, leading to discrimination and
violence against migrants and ethnic minorities of long standing, especially the Roma, affecting
their health and accentuating the barriers they face in obtaining appropriate health care.
We call on all European governments to take concrete steps to protect the health of migrants and ethnic
minorities in Europe and, specifically, to demonstrate that they will live up to their obligations under the
International Covenant on Social, Economic and Cultural Rights and the European Social Charter to
ensure the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental
health, and in particular to their obligation of refraining from denying or limiting equal access to
healthcare for all persons, including undocumented migrants and minorities, highlighted in the General
Comment No. 14 of the Committee on Social, Economic and Cultural Rights, so as to recognise the
contribution that everyone, including migrants and ethnic minorities, make to the social and economic
development of Europe.

The College of Contemporary Health brings together leading obesity experts to create a free online learning course to tackle the national obesity crisis.
London, United Kingdom 7 April, 2014 – The College of Contemporary Health (CCH), a UK-based online College, is bringing together leading obesity experts with the mission to make the UK healthcare profession the most obesity literate in the world. Just over a quarter of UK adults are classified as obese, according to the NHS Health and Social Care Information Centre report. Obesity has an estimated annual cost to the UK economy in excess of £16 billion a year.
CCH believes it is necessary to address the problem head on, and today has launched the UK’s first free massive open online course (MOOC) on Living and Working with Obesity. The course is for those who live with obesity, including health care professionals who deal with the condition every day.
This free 4-week course uses an innovative, easy-to-use digital platform, CCH-X, that features a unique configuration of social media tools. The course addresses the causes, consequences and challenges that society faces today in the pervasive obesogenic environment we all live in, and encourages people to explore their own solutions to the problem.

‘ SALT REDUCTION IS IMPORTANT, BUT MY INTAKE IS FINE’
FIRST GLOBAL OVERVIEW ON HOW AND WHY WE CONSUME SALT
A new research study conducted by a consortium of International Union of Nutritional Societies (IUNS) and Unilever scientists provides a first global overview of consumer perception of salt consumption. The study will be presented at the Unilever satellite symposium on Behavior Change for Better Health during the IUNS 20th ICN Congress 2013 in Granada, Spain by Prof Yang (IUNS-China) and Dr Feunekes (Unilever).
It is well established that salt reduction is important to reduce hypertension and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a maximum of 5 grams of salt per day for adults. Nevertheless, worldwide salt intake is well above the recommended levels. For public health strategies to be effective however, it is important to understand salt intake behaviors. Governments and NGOs need to motivate and educate their populations with strategies, adapted locally, to speed up the reduction of salt intake as a major strategy to promote health.
Within the context of a partnership between the International Union of Nutrition Sciences (IUNS) and Unilever on Behavior Change for Better Health an international study was conducted across eight countries and five continents, to gain insights on knowledge, attitudes and behaviours related to salt consumption in the general population.
Representative samples, stratified for age and gender, were recruited from online cohorts from Germany/Austria, United States of America, Hungary, India, China, South Africa, and Brazil and 6,987 participants completed a comprehensive web-based questionnaire on salt intake and associated behaviours. The study was co-authored by leaders of national nutrition societies in each country of the study & the President of the IUNS, Professor Ibrahim Elmadfa.
A key finding was that, overall, salt reduction was perceived to be healthy and important, yet the majority was unaware of the official daily salt intake recommendations or the sources of salt in their diet. “Although over one third of the people around the world is currently not interested in reducing their salt intake, the positive news is that the majority wants to learn about why salt is bad for health and how to reduce salt intakes” says Dr Feunekes.
Participants saw themselves as mainly responsible for their salt intake, but also acknowledged the role of others. As such, strategies to reduce salt intake must stimulate an interest to reduce salt intake through an improved understanding of intake levels and dietary sources of salt.
The study shows that around 70% of salt intake is derived from bought food, ranging from 42% in India to 83% in USA; the rest is added during food preparation and at the table.
‘The findings provide a good basis for salt reduction strategies and policies and provide unique insights into knowledge, attitudes and behaviors relating to salt consumption’, says IUNS President Professor Elmadfa, ‘While some aspects of salt reduction can be globally implemented, local strategies should be tailored to match the specific needs of the population’.
The study is summarized in a soon-to-be released scientific paper in the journal Appetite: ‘Barriers for progress in salt reduction in the general population: An international study’, (2013). Newson, RS, Elmadfa I, Biro Gy, Cheng Y, Prakash V, Rust P, Barna M, Lion, R, Meijer GW, Neufingerl N, Szabolcs I, van Zweden R, Yang Y & Feunekes GIJ. The study will be published in September, during the IUNS ICN 2013 meeting in Granada, Spain.
